My story
How I found my way into web design
Law school, recession, and a different path
I originally studied law at the University of Otago and completed my professional studies, but graduating into a difficult job market meant my career took a different direction.
That change of direction turned out to be one of the best things that could have happened. The skills I developed through law — research, analysis, attention to detail and clear communication — have been incredibly useful in my web design work.
Discovering the internet
When I discovered the internet, I was fascinated by the possibilities. Websites combined technology, communication, design and problem-solving — and I realised this was where I wanted to work.
Since then I’ve worked across web design, content, online marketing, SEO and website management, before eventually starting Web Matters.
Starting Web Matters
I became self-employed in 2006 and have been helping businesses with their websites ever since.
Over the years I’ve worked with sole traders, small businesses, community organisations and larger organisations, helping them launch new websites, improve existing websites and solve frustrating technical problems.

Things I’ve learned after decades online
Technology changes constantly, but the fundamentals of good service and good communication haven’t changed much at all.
Good communication matters
Clients need to know what is happening, what their options are, and what decisions they need to make.
The cheapest option is rarely the cheapest
A poorly built website can cost more in fixes, frustration and missed opportunities later.
Websites need care
A website is not a one-off job. It needs updates, security, backups and ongoing attention.
Blogging still matters
Helpful written content builds trust, supports search visibility and gives people a reason to come back.
Independence has value
Owning your website and your content gives your business more control over its online presence.
Relationships matter
Many of my best client relationships have lasted for years because trust builds over time.
Outside work
A real person behind the website
Outside of Web Matters, I enjoy photography, gardening, writing and exploring Christchurch. I’ve also spent many years publishing Christchurch Daily Photo, which reflects my long-standing interest in the web as a place for independent publishing.
I think that personal connection matters. A good website project is not just about the technology — it’s also about trust, communication and understanding what a business is trying to achieve.
Could we work together?
If you’re looking for a website designer who combines decades of industry experience with practical, down-to-earth advice, I’d love to hear about your project.
