Evaluating your online competition

It never hurts to find out what the competition are up to online. So write down the names of your three top competitors. Now look at their websites. If you don’t know their web site address go to Google and enter in their company name and geographic location.
Print out the main pages of your competitor’s web sites and analyse them for content, style and navigation.

Ask yourself:

  1. What sort of information are they providing?
  2. Who are they trying to appeal to?
  3. What are they doing right and what are they doing wrong?
  4. Would you use their services based on their website?

Though it’s perfectly fine to get some ideas, don’t be too influenced by another company’s website. You have to ensure that your message is delivered loud and clear, and that your competitive advantages are emphasised.

Also, never copy content from another web site, you can get inspiration, but leave it at that – remember copyright laws protect web site content.

You might like to consider finding a company that is located outside of your target market but is in the same line of business. E-mail them and find out what has worked for them with their website. Because you are not direct competition they might be happy to email you back with their results.
